Born to Draw

Sketchpad and pencil in hand, Vince Thompson is often found head down, lost in his work, which happens to be creating comics.
Inspired by classic comic strips like Peanuts, Archie and Calvin and Hobbes, Thompson, a Niagara Falls resident, began drawing and doodling at an early age. In 2004, he came up with the idea for a story line for a comic book.
Vinny & Bud, hand-drawn and child-friendly, is set in the 1970’s and Thompson describes it as “Charlie Brown meets That 70’s Show”. Edward, “Bud”, moves to a new city with his divorcee mother and befriends Vinny who lives with his brother Bill and his war vet grandfather.
“The book is based on actual experiences and actual people I’ve known and still know,” said Thompson.
In fact, he originally created the characters for a mural at an elementary school. He liked them so much that he decided to create a storyline and based the character Vinny on himself.
Thompson said that he had been working on the comic for six years but not very seriously in the beginning. He gave a skit to a friend who happened to be a teacher at an elementary school to see what the students thought.
“They would point out things and laughed,” said Thompson. “If a 10-year-old kid can laugh at the skit, then I’m going in the right direction and I’ve reached my audience.”
Vinny and Bud’s daily adventures include contemplating the morality of sneaking into the movies, dealing with Vinny’s grandfather’s war flashbacks, and battling the blizzard of ’77.
Thompson said that often the scenarios were ones that happened in his own life. For example, he went to get a tattoo and suddenly everyone who was in the tattoo shop that day became a character in the book.
Having always wanted to do books for a living or make his comics into a daily series like Lynn Johnston’s For Better or Worse, Thompson hopes to age Vinny and Bud into the ‘80’s.
For now, he spends all his free time sketching and dreaming up new scenarios for Vinny and Bud and also visiting Chapters and Coles for book signings. Having being told his whole life that he should do a book, Thompson is far from done and says he won’t stop until he’s physically unable to hold a pencil.
